Leonora Box: Flowers of Western Samoa The ribbons on this exquisite wedding bouquet bear the national colors of Western Samoa. Eight Samoan flowers are represented in the bouquet. The Zephyranthes rosea grows like wild crocus on Samoa. The Barringtonia samoensis is a native Barringtonia that Samoans value for its fragrant, delicate blossoms. The Hibiscus rosa-sinensis is a shrub producing stunning flowers which often find their way into necklaces of blooms. Known to the natives as "Pua Samoa," the Gardenia taitensis is often woven into a necklace to commemorate a journey. The Canagium odoratum is a beautiful golden flower which displays distinctive curled petals. It is known as "Moso'oi" by the Samoans. When the Aglaia saltatorum appears in a floral necklace, it helps to signify the nature of a journey to be undertaken. The beautiful Hoya australis , known locally as "Suni tai," has an alluring honeysuckle fragrance. Samoan children use the ripe fruit of the Sea Cups plant for whistles, and the nuts as marbles.
