Chuck Ripper: Green Turtle All seven species of sea turtles are listed as threatened or endangered. Of the seven species, Green Turtles (Chelonia mydas) are the swiftest. Ranging in size from three to four feet, Green Turtles can be found in seas worldwide. Primarily herbivorous, Green Turtles feed on seaweed and sea grasses, although jellyfish and crustaceans are also occasionally eaten. These beautiful turtles avoid land except to lay eggs, although sometimes they will lie in the sand, basking in the warm sun until they fall asleep. Every two or three years, Green Turtles migrate hundreds and even thousands of miles to mate and lay eggs at the beach of their birth. Quick and agile in the sea, on land they must clumsily drag their heavy bodies forward with their flippers, exposing themselves to many hazards and predators -- including people. Both sexes are non-monogamous and may mate with several others during the mating period. The female sweeps away sand with her foreflippers and deposits over 100 eggs in the hole she has created. After two to three months, the young hatch and make a mad scramble for the sea past numerous hungry predators. In the past, turtles have been exploited by man for their meat, shells, hides and eggs. Fortunately, imports are now banned in many countries and several conservation groups monitor the egg-laying in a wide-reaching effort to protect turtles from poachers. It is unknown how many of these majestic sea creatures remain.
