Basil Smith: Leatherback Turtle in Sand The rare Leatherback Turtle is aptly named. Its shell is covered with a smooth sheet of black or brown skin instead of the usual horny shields that protect other turtles. The Leatherback's skin is very oily, which spares it from being coated with barnacles and seaweed -- a problem experienced by many other turtles. Its freedom from barnacles helps make this turtle a speedy swimmer.
