Basil Smith: Leatherback Turtle Swimming Able to achieve an amazing length of eight feet and a weight of one ton, the Leatherback is considered the largest of all turtles. This massive sea creature is capable of great bursts of speed underwater, but on land its bulk and flippers are a hindrance. Only the female ventures ashore to burrow out a nest and lay her eggs. Unlike other marine turtles, the Leatherback has a smooth sheet of skin covering its back in place of a shell.
