Basil Smith: Leatherback Turtle The Leatherback Turtle has one characteristic which distinguishes it from other turtle species. In place of the horny plates which cover other turtles' streamlined shell, it has smooth, leathery skin. The largest turtle of all, this species is common to warm ocean waters throughout the world. The Leatherback Turtle tends to live a solitary existence and joins small groups only during nesting season.
