In the deep blue waters off many Pacific Ocean islands, is found one of the most abundant and widespread inhabitants of the ocean ... the Green Turtle. As with most large sea turtles, the female lays her eggs in the sand above the high-tide level. Unfortunately, the eggs are easy prey for predators such as the raccoon, gulls and jaguars. Once the young turtles reach the safety of the sea, many are able to overcome the perils of the ocean and grow to maturity where their size makes them virtually immune to danger while in their watery habitat. Adult Green Turtles usually average between two and three hundred pounds although the largest Green Turtle ever recorded weighed 850 pounds. Unlike many other sea turtles, the Green Turtle is a vegetarian and feeds mainly on turtle grass and algae. The turtles roam as far as fifteen hundred miles from their birth site only to return to the same beach to mate and lay their eggs. This uncanny ability to navigate thousand of miles without guideposts of any kind has caught the attention of the U.S. Navy. Naval officials are quite interested in finding the secret of the Green Turtle's internal direction and position finding so they can adapt the knowledge for use in Navy guidance systems.
