The waters surrounding the Federated States of Micronesia are teeming with a vast array of exotic fish. The Bigscale Soldierfish is the most common of the many soldierfish found there. Its orange spinous dorsal fin handsomely distinguishes it from others in its family. During the daylight hours, this creature lingers in caves and under ledges of subtidal reef flats.

This painting was originally published on the Federated States of Micronesia 10¢ Bigscale Soldierfish stamp issued May 20, 1994.
