The children of Australia grow up amid a natural wonderland of plants and animals different from those found on any other continent. Kangaroos, platypuses, and emu are only three of many unusual creatures that are at home in Australia. And just as the beasts of Australia are unique to the country, so is the life of the people. The children depicted in this artwork live on a sheep station. Their vast country provides at least one fourth of the world's wool and thus sheep are very important to the economy. On the sheep station everyone must do his part to see that the sheep are properly attended. Since the sheep stations sometimes cover as much as several thousand miles, hired hands often live on the station to help the owner work his huge flocks. And always there are dogs that follow the sheep, protecting them from danger. Often, these dogs become special friends to the farmer's children and enjoy many retrieving games when they are not busy rounding up the flock. The sheep stations are frequently far apart and are sometimes far from highways. On these stations, airplanes provide the main means of transportation. On the really isolated stations, a few children attend school through the "School of the Air," a radio tramsmitted classroom session that reaches youngsters spread over three states. For the children on the sheep station, life is very different from that of youngsters in the bustling Australian cities, but it has charm and rewards all its own.
