Marsha Howe: Spanish Andorra Costumes and Native Dress Centuries ago, treaties between France and Spain placed the tiny country of Andorra under the joint rule of its powerful neighbors. The protection this arrangement provided has served Andorra well. In fact, in mnay ways to live in Andorra is to have the best of two worlds. Andorrans enjoy almost all the privileges of both French and Spanish citizenship yet they pay no taxes to either country and are exempt from military service in both. Nestled amid the Pyrenees Mountains, the tiny country seems almost part of another age. For example, divorce is unknown in Andoraa and the country's laws are unwritten or common laws based on custom. From the 1100's until the 1930's, life in Andorra changed very little. Today, tourists from all over the world flock to Andorra to enjoy this seemingly changeless society. In fact, tourism has become the mainstay of the Andorran economy. The influx of foreign tourists has brought many new ideas to the tiny country. Yet, the Andorrans have clung to the time-honored traditions of their ancestors. Native costumes, like those depicted in this painting are a part of this proud heritage. In their native dress, as in their customs and government, the Andorrans have preserved the color and romance of their remarkable land.
