Paul and Chris Calle: 1980s - Personal Computer In 1980, IBM started a top secret computer development endeavor called "Project Chess." Lacking an operating system to make the computer work, IBM turned to software manufacturer Microsoft, who quickly purchased Seattle Computer Products' disk-operating system (DOS) and renamed it MS-DOS (Microsoft disk-operating system). On August 12, 1981, IBM unveiled the fruit of its hush-hush project -- the IBM PC -- and for the first time, the personal computer was recognized as a legitimate business tool. Many people who had previously been wary of purchasing a personal computer now went out and bought one from IBM. As a result, the IBM PC became the industry standard -- quickly capturing 75 percent of the market. Less than four months after the introduction of the IBM PC, Time magazine named The Computer "Man of the Year." In 1982, the first IBM clones were introduced. Two years later, Apple Computer introduced the Macintosh, the world's first "user-friendly" personal computer featuring GUI (graphical user interface). By the end of the decade, however, Microsoft dominated the computer industry by selling MS-DOS to IBM's competitors. Personal computers would ultimately revolutionize the way people communicate and conduct business.
