Donald Moss: Old Washington Post Office
In the early 1890's, the United States Postal Service found it necessary to build a new Post Office in Washington, D.C. Designed by the famed architect, Willoughby J. Edbrooke, construction on the majestic building began, and spanned over seven years. When finally completed in 1899, the beautiful building became home to the Washington, D.C. Post Office, and to the United States Federal Post Office Department. The huge Romanesque structure is truly a remarkable building. One of its most outstanding features is its imposing fourteen-story clock tower. This gigantic tower rises dramatically from the ground to over three-hundred feet in the air. Near the top of the tower ... about 250 feet above the pavement ... four large clock faces, each 20 feet in diameter, boldly display the time of day. Today, the Old Washington Post Office has been preserved and refurbished. The preservation of this historic building required three years of tedious work. However, the result is a beautiful, fully revitalized building. The upper stories of the renovated structure are occupied by the National Endowment for the Arts and the National Endowment for the Humanities. In addition, the lower floors, including the building's pavilion-like center, house a variety of boutiques, stores and restaurants.
