Bruce Weatherhead: Early Bendigo Post Office in Australia As early as 1848 the creek on which Bendigo now stands was referred to as Bendigo Creek. After a gold discovery, the mining town of Bendigo began to grow. William Larritt surveyed a street plan in 1854 and land auctions were held soon afterwards. Banks and other institutions along with well provisioned shops were quickly established. By 1861 there were churches, schools, hospital, asylum, courts, post office, breweries, hotels, newspapers, gas lighting, connection by telegraph and rail to Melbourne. A beautifully ornate post office was completed in 1887, replacing the one room structure.
