Mel Crawford: Nathanel Greene, Eutaw Springs Battle Despite the searing heat of the South Carolina summer, American General Greene rallied his troops to take on British soldiers commanded by Alexander Stewart. On September 8, 1781, Greene hurled his 2,200 veteran Continentals and partisan fighters against Stewart's almost equal force of Tories and Redcoats who were camped at Eutaw Springs, fifty miles from Charleston. It was the bloodiest combat of the war in the South. There were repeated charges and countercharges as officers led their men into the fray and fought hand to hand. Finally, Greene's troops drove the British and Tories back through their campsite and appeared to have won the battle. Then their discipline -- which had been so strict up until then -- broke down as the famished Continentals halted to gorge themselves on the plentiful food they found in the enemy tents. Soon, they also discovered the British rum supply, and the last shreds of discipline disappeared. Meanwhile, the fleeing foe found shelter in a nearby brick house and rallied. Although American guns bombarded the structure, they made little impression on its thick walls. A sharp British counterattack soon regained the camp, driving the besotted Continentals into the woods. Although outright victory eluded General Greene and his losses were heavy, Stewart suffered even more severely. The survivors limped back to Charleston, never, as it turned out, to take the field again.
