Jim Butcher: George Washington and Troops at Valley Forge In the fall of 1777, Washington's war-weary soldiers were routed by the British in the Battle of Brandywine. That defeat paved the way for the British occupation of Philadelphia, then the nation's capital. With Philadelphia in British hands, the Continental Congress was forced to flee to York, Pennsylvania. In order to be in a position to protect the Congress, Washington's army encamped at Valley Forge, located 22 miles northwest of Philadelphia where the Valley Creek joined the Schuylkill River. The site also offered the Americans a view of an important highway which connected Philadelphia to industrial strongholds in nearby Chester County. An abnormally cold winter, the weather proved a terrible burden to men without blankets, with inadequate medicines, and with barely enough provisions to ward off starvation. Two days before Christmas, 1777, Washington wrote: "We have this day not less than 2,873 men in camp unfit for duty because they are barefooted or otherwise naked ... As might be expected, hundreds of Washington's original force of 11,000 perished. Yet, the surviving troops endured the uncommon hardships and remained steadfast in their commitment to the cause of independence.
