Charles J. Berger: Herkimer at Oriskany The summer of 1777 was witness to Britain's grand plan to divide the American colonies, and put to rest rebellious thoughts of independence! A giant pincer move was planned in which Redcoats would march north along the Hudson River from New York, and down the same waterway from Canada. An additional thrust, with Lieutenant Colonel Barry St. Leger in command, was to strike from Oswego down the Mohawk Valley. With Albany their common target, the plan would have split the colonies asunder. One of young patriots who saved the day for America was Brigadier General Nicholas Herkimer. Having learned that St. Leger's troops had laid siege to Fort Stanwix, Herkimer called his militia to arms. The fort, a large earthen, bastioned, and moated installation, stood where Rome, New York, now stands. Herkimer's men camped the evening of August 5 on Oriskany Creek, a few miles from the fort. The following morning, as they advanced to bring relief to the fort, the Yankees were ambushed by Indians under the leadership of famed Chief Joseph Brant. The ensuing battle is popularly called the bloodiest of the Revolution, with severe losses sustained on either side. While rallying his troops, Herkimer's mount was killed, and the General took a bullet in the leg. He directed the remaining battle from a vantage point beneath a beech tree, where he sat upon his saddle and coolly puffed his pipe. A sudden downpour silenced the muskets. Although General Herkimer died days later, the gates to Albany remained closed.
