Lyle Tayson: James Madison James Madison, "Father of the Constitution", helped draft the Virginia Plan that laid the groundwork for the United States Constitution. Born in 1751 in Port Conway, Virginia, Madison was educated at the College of New Jersey. After graduation, he returned to Virginia where he served in the first state legislature under Governor Patrick Henry. At the age of twenty-eight, Madison was elected to Congress, where he helped organize the U.S. government under the Articles of Confederation. In 1786, the legislature sent Madison to the Annapolis Convention, where he worked in promoting a Constitutional Convention. At the Convention, Madison kept accurate records of the meetings and spoke more often than any other delegate. Madison served as a member of the Committee of Style that drew up the final version of the U.S. Constitution, and he voted for acceptance of the Constitution and its submission to the states for ratification. Madison helped in writing the series of essays that were later published as The Federalist. He was then elected to the new U.S. Congress and was of invaluable aid to President Washington. He later served as Secretary of State under President Thomas Jefferson, and won the office of President himself in 1808. Madison was the last survivor of the signers of the Constitution, and his report on the debates was kept secret until after his death in 1836.
