Lyle Tayson: James Wilson James Wilson was born in Scotland, and educated at the Universities of St. Andrews, Glasgow and Edinburgh. He immigrated to America, and accepted a position as a Latin tutor at the College of Philadelphia, but almost immediately abandoned it to study law under John Dickinson. He was admitted to the Philadelphia bar in 1767. He also lectured on English literature at the College of Philadelphia, which had awarded him an honorary Master of Arts degree in 1766. Wilson was elected to both the provincial assembly and the Continental Congress, where he sat mainly on military and Indian Affairs committees. From 1779 to 1783, he took a position as Advocate General for France in America. During 1781, Congress appointed him as one of the directors of the Bank of North America. At the Constitutional Convention in 1787, Wilson rarely missed a session, and sat on the Committee of Detail. He firmly championed the rights of the people to elect members of Congress and the President. In many ways, he applied his excellent knowledge of political theory to Convention problems. For his services in the formation of the Federal Government, President Washington named him as an Associate Justice in 1789. He was chosen that same year as the first law professor at the College of Philadelphia. Between 1792 and 1795, he made huge and unwise land investments. To avoid arrest for debt, Wilson fled to North Carolina. He died a poor man in 1798.
