William Livingston was born in Albany, New York in 1723 to a rich and powerful family. He received his education at Yale, where he graduated at the head of his class. After graduation, Livingston went on to New York City, completed his law studies and was admitted to the bar in 1748. While studying law, Livingston wrote a play, essays and poems. He rose rapidly in the legal profession and at the same time became known as a writer on controversial subjects. Livingstion served in a political office for the first time from 1758 to 1760 as a member of the colonial legislature of New York. He was also writing weekly essays in the New York Gazette. He retired at the age of forty-nine and moved to New Jersey. Shortly after his move, a sixteen-year-old boy came to his door, bringing with him letters of introduction from a Presbyterian minister in the West Indies, where the boy had been born. Livingston put the boy in school, and later sent him to King's College in New York. The boy's name was Alexander Hamilton. Meanwhile, Livingston served in both the first and second Continental Congress. In 1776, the New Jersey legislature elected him as the state's first Governor. In 1786, he succeeded in having the New Jersey legislature forbid the importation of slaves into the state. At the Constitutional Convention in 1787, Livingston supported the position of the small states. After the Convention, Livingston continued to hold the office of Governor until his death in 1790.
