Lyle Tayson: John Blair John Blair was born in Williamsburg, Virginia, in 1732. He attended William and Mary College, and then went to England to study law. He returned to Williamsburg in the late 1750's and became a member of the bar. Elected to the House of Burgesses, Blair signed a non-importation agreement in protest against British taxes. In the Virginia patriotic convention of 1776, he was a member of the committee that drew up Virginia's Declaration of Rights and state constitution. John Blair began his judicial career in 1778 at the age of forty-six, when hewas appointed to the general court of Virginia. Shortly afterward he became its chief justice. Two years later, he was elected judge of Virginia's high court of chancery and a member of the state's first court of appeals. His reputation as a wise, honorable judge and statesman won him election in 1787 to Virginia's delegation to the Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia. His participation in the convention was overshadowed by that of other Virginia delegates. He occasionally opposed Washington and Madison, and voted against the establishment of a president as a single executive to administer the laws of the United States. After the Constitution's signing, President George Washington made him an associate justice of the first Supreme Court of the United States, signing Blair's commission on September 30, 1789. Because of illness, Blair resigned from the Supreme Court on January 27, 1796, and died in 1800.
