Lyle Tayson: David Brearley David Brearley was born in Spring Grove, New Jersey, on June 11, 1745. After studying law, Brearley was admitted to the bar at age twenty-one, and began practicing law in Allentown, New Jersey. With the approach of the American Revolution, Brearley became an outspoken patriot; so much so that he was arrested for treason. After the outbreak of fighting with the British, he was appointed a captain in the New Jersey militia. In 1776, he was promoted to lieutenant colonel in the 4th New Jersey regiment. The next year, he was transferred at the same rank to the first New Jersey regiment. In 1779, he was elected by the state legislature as Chief Justice of New Jersey. Brearley was also an ardent Episcopalian, and helped compile the American version of the Episcopal Book of Common Prayer. Brearley was the first delegate elected by any state to the Constitutional Convention. At the Philadelphia Convention in 1787, he denounced efforts by Virginia and the large states to control Congress under the new government. He strongly supported the new Constitution back home in New Jersey and was elected president of the state ratification convention that approved the document in 1787. As a presidential elector for New Jersey, Brearley cast his vote for George Washington for President in 1789. In November of that year, Brearley was appointed by Washington the U.S. District Judge for New Jersey. He served less than a year, dying at the age of forty-five on August 16, 1790.
