Lyle Tayson: James McHenry James McHenry was born in Ballymena, Ireland in 1753. He came to America at age seventeen, and studied medicine. He served as a volunteer surgeon in the Continental Army hospitals, and later became senior surgeon at the Valley Forge Army Hospital. He then became General George Washington's secretary. In 1780, he was transferred to the staff of the Marquis de Lafayette. While in camp at the siege of Yorktown, the legislature of Maryland elected him to the state senate, and he began serving in the legislature in 1782. The next year, the legislature elected him to the Congress of the Confederation. He was then elected by the Maryland state legislature as a delegate to the Constitutional Convention in 1787, where he took little part in the debates. He became an active Federalist for the rest of his life. In 1788, McHenry successfully ran on a Federalist ticket for a seat in the House of Delegates of the state legislature, and he was elected to the State Senate in 1791. McHenry was sworn into office as Secretary of War in 1796. France and the U.S. nearly reached a state of war during Adams's administration, and McHenry supervised the construction and launching of the first U.S. warships, the frigates Constellation, United States and Constitution. In 1800, Adams charged McHenry with promoting Hamilton's interests over his own, and demanded McHenry's resignation. McHenry then retired from both public and business affairs. He died at the age of sixty-two in 1816. This artwork was originally published on the Fleetwood® First Day Cover for The Signers of the Constitution Collection issued on September 17, 1987.
