Lyle Tayson: Hugh Williamson
Hugh Williamson was a well-educated man who enjoyed a varied career -- preacher, physician, essayist, scientist, businessman and politician. He took his degree at the College of Philadelphia in 1757. He trained in Connecticut for the ministry, and soon became a licensed Presbyterian preacher, but was never ordained. He also took a position as professor of mathematics at his alma mater, In 1764, he abandoned these pursuits and studied medicine, eventually obtaining a degree from the University of Utrecht. He returned to Philadelphia, where he continued his pursuit of scientific interests. In 1771, he wrote An Essay on Comets, in which he advanced several original ideas. In 1773, he made a trip to the West Indies and then to Europe. While in England, he cooperated in electrical experiments with Benjamine Franklin. Upon his return to America, Williamson settled down in North Carolina, where he prospered in a mercantile business. During the Revolutionary War, he was Surgeon-General of State Troops. After the war, he began his political career. In 1782, he was elected to the lower house of the State Legislature and to the Continental Congress. In 1787, he attended the Constitutional Convention, where he served on five committees. After the Convention, he was elected to the first U.S. House of Representatives, where he served two terms. Over the years, he published many political, educational, economic, historical and scientific works. He died in 1819.
