Paul and Chris Calle: 1940s - Post War Baby Boom When American servicemen returned home after World War II, the United States experienced a birth explosion that would significantly influence all areas of society -- political, social, cultural and economic -- throughout the rest of the century and beyond. Known as Baby Boomers, the 77 million babies born between 1946 and 1964 grew up during America's affluent post-war era. The previous generation, having experienced the trauma of the Great Depression and the sacrifices of world war, sought to provide their children with a better life. Many parents of the 1950s would even aspire to achieve the ideal nuclear family portrayed weekly by popular television shows like Father Knows Best, Ozzie and Harriet and Leave It To Beaver. As the millions of Baby Boomers progressed through each eventful stage of life, society would reflect the sometimes tumultuous impact they had on American culture. For example, in the 1950s, when Baby Boomers started attending school, increased enrollments would prompt educators to reevaluate previous teaching methods. In the 1960s, college campuses became flooded with Baby Boomers, and during the 1970s Baby Boomers would swamp the job market. As the millennium approaches, the ubiquitous Baby Boomers will continue to have a strong influence on all areas of American life.
