Chris Calle: In Peace for All Mankind Although millions of people had the opportunity to watch some of the historic events of the Apollo 11 mission on TV, astronaut Michael Collins, orbiting the Moon in the Columbia command module, was not privy to such telecasts. He relied on CapCom, the capsule communicator in Houston, for play-by-play accounts of the lunar adventures of his fellow crew members. One of the most memorable of those was the planting of the American flag in the Moon's dusty surface. Neil Armstrong and Edwin Aldrin had discovered that while treading on the lunar surface their boots generally sank just a fraction of an inch. And when they attempted to plant the shaft of the flag into the Moon's soil, it took a great deal of pressure. As Aldrin later remarked: "After much struggling we finally coaxed it to remain upright, but in a most precarious position. I dreaded the possibility of the American flag collapsing into the lunar dust in front of the television camera." Fortunately Aldrin's fears were allayed, for Old Glory stood tall throughout the telecast. Although Collins was deprived of the pleasure of viewing the raising of the American banner on the Moon, he did receive the following report from CapCom: "They've got the flag up now and you can see the Stars and Stripes on the lunar surface." The astronaut's brief response clearly reflected his satisfaction: "Beautiful. Just beautiful." Artwork Copyright © 1994 Unicover Corporation.
