Dennis Lyall: United States Flag with Clouds in Background Designed not long after the American Revolution, the American flag flies boldly -- a symbol throughout the world of freedom for all. Through two centuries of growth, the red, white and blue of her cloth have brought tears to the eyes of the oppressed, and her stars -- grown in number from 13 to 50 -- have stood for unity within. "One nation, indivisible..." is part of the pledge which binds her citizens to a noble creed of "liberty and justice for all." Though the nation has stumbled in the past, the flag, its creed and the people have pulled her together as one. And, today, the American flag is hailed -- an honored guest -- at public events throughout the land, however casual or esteemed those events might be. From baseball games to presidential inaugurations, the first order of business is allegiance to this symbol of freedom and the American way of life. Thus, this glorious flag is flown proudly above public buildings and private homes in cities and towns, from the Atlantic to the Pacific Ocean, and from the Gulf of Mexico to the Arctic shores. And America is indeed worthy of her beauty, for this land of immense wonder, magnificence and opportunity is bounded only by the limits of human ingenuity. It is a land which faces a bright future filled with promises and dreams.
