Ed Little: Wyoming Statehood
Sparsely populated and largely unspoiled, the state of Wyoming possesses a rugged, natural beauty that draws thousands of visitors annually, making tourism one of the state's major industries. Camping, hunting, fishing and the old west atmosphere of rodeos, roundups, frontier celebrations and dude ranches brings increasing numbers of vacationers to the state annually. Tourists marvel at the state's two spectacular national parks -- Grand Teton embraces the most stunning portion of the Teton Mountains, and Yellowstone, the oldest and largest of all American national parks, covers the northwest corner of the state with steaming geysers, bubbling mudpots and breathtaking scenery. Wyoming is also home to the nation's first national monument, Devil's Tower, the looming rock formation that has intrigued visitors through the ages, from the state's earliest inhabitants to today's residents and tourists alike. Among the early residents, fur trappers and mountain men were largely responsible for opening the area to the white man in the early 1800's, and completion of the Wyoming segment of the Union Pacific Railroad brought an influx of settlers in the 1860's. After pioneering political equality in 1869 by extending the vote to women, Wyoming became the "Equality State" in 1890, the forty-fourth state admitted to the Union. Fittingly, Wyoming was the first state to elect a woman governor. She was Nellie Taylor Ross, and she is pictured in the lower right corner of the cachet.
