Chris Calle: Flag/Military Saluting The special self-adhesive 25c Flag stamp featured on this Maxicard was the first plastic stamp to be issued by the United States Post Office. It was produced in a new format consisting of twelve stamps per pane, each pane approximately the size of a dollar bill. The new size of the pane and the plastic type paper were used so this innovative stamp could be vended like money at automated teller machines on a test basis. The stamp's patriotic design features a red, white and blue flag motif with red inscriptions. Everywhere in the United States, from public buildings to private homes, the American flag waves proudly in the breeze, recognized by all as a symbol of democracy. School children across the country started each day with the words, "I pledge allegiance to the flag .... " Organizations from the Boy Scouts of America to the United States Marines take patriotic oaths of duty to the flag. And the flag motif has long been a popular theme for U.S. Postage Stamps as well, among them the 3c Raising of the Flag at Iwo Jima issued in 1945; the 1952 stamp commemorating the Birth of Betsy Ross; the 50-Star Flag Stamp issued in 1960 to commemorate Hawaii's admission to the Union; the 22c Flag with Fireworks Stamp of 1987 and the 25c Flag with Clouds Stamp which replaced it when postal rates increased in 1988; and many more. In 1990, the United States Post Office continued its tradition of flag stamps with the innovative plastic 25c Flag Stamp issued on May 18 in Seattle, Washington. This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood® Maximum Card for the U.S. 25¢ Self-adhesive Flag stamp issued May 18, 1990. Artwork Copyright © 1990 Unicover Corporation.
