A century ago, Francis Bellamy penned the immortal words that were henceforth to mark the beginning of the school day for millions of American children: "I pledge allegiance to my Flag and the Republic for which it stands; one nation indivisible, with liberty and Justice for all." This version of the Pledge of Allegiance was first published on September 8, 1892, in a children's magazine The Youth's Companion, for which Bellamy was an assistant editor. Over the years, the Pledge excited controversy and Bellamy's original words were modified slightly. In 1924, the phrase "the flag of the United States of America" was substituted for "my Flag." In 1939, a committee of the U.S. Flag Association ruled that despite claims to the contrary -- Bellamy had indeed written the original Pledge. And in 1942, the Pledge was officially recognized by the U.S. government. But even after 50 years, the Pledge still hadn't reached its current form. In 1954, at the urging of President Eisenhower, the words "under God" were added. Today, the Pledge of Allegiance recited daily in many American schools reads: "I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America and to the Republic for which it stands, one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all."

This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood® Maximum Card for the U.S. 29¢ Pledge of Allegiance stamp issued September 8, 1992.
