Dean Ellis: James Madison "A great man," wrote Justice Holmes, "is a strategic point in the campaign of history, and part of his greatness consists in his being there." Certainly, by that good fortune which gave the infant United States a body of leaders unsurpassed in history, Madison was there. He was there as "Father of the Constitution," co-author of the Federalist Papers, author and sponsor of the federal Bill of Rights, and one of the writers of the Virginia Statute of Religious Liberty. He was there to serve as Secretary of State under Jefferson, then succeed Jefferson in the Presidency and preside over the War of 1812. Indeed, in the whole of our history, only Madison's lifelong friend Jefferson has a comparable record of service to his country. "Mr. Madison is a character who has long been in public life; and what is very remarkable, every person seems to acknowledge his greatness," Jefferson remarked at one point. "He blends together the profound politician with the scholar. In the management of every great Question, he evidently took the lead in the convention, and although he cannot be called an orator, he is a most agreeable, eloquent, and convincing speaker." Madison was also famous for his diligence. As Jefferson noted, he always came "forward the best informed man of any point in debate." Still, Madison's modesty and good nature won him many friends. In retirement, he devoted himself to editing the voluminous notes he had taken on the Constitutional Convention.
