Dennis Lyall: Flag and Star/Graphic Design In the fanfare accompanying the Bicentennial of the United States Constitution, a quiet tribute to the original thirteen colonies seemed most appropriate. For, it was the brave citizens of those colonies -- of Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Connecticut, Rhode Island, New York, New Jersey, Delaware, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia -- who rose up in defiance of British rule, risking all that they had, and their very lives, for freedom. And many of those who fought, came again to Philadelphia to see the country formed which would carry their dreams of liberty to future generations. Delegates of those same thirteen colonies, now as states, agonized over the United States Constitution, as it came around for ratification. Taking nothing for granted, they debated each point to its proper conclusion, eventually demanding as well a Bill of Rights, guaranteeing all men the freedoms for which they had so fiercely fought. And, in the end, it was the original thirteen states which ratified that Constitution, building a new nation which would stand as a symbol throughout the world of the power of a free people. America issued this Postal Envelope in 1988, the Bicentennial Year of the ratification of the United States Constitution, and salutes the original thirteen colonies from which a nation grew. The stars in a circle honor each of those colonies and the union they created. This painting originally appeared on the Fleetwood® First Day of issue 25¢ Stars Envelope issued March 26, 1988.
