Stanley Paine: Supermarine Sea Eagle In 1923, Supermarine Aviation Works established the government subsidized British Marine Air Navigation Company. R.J. Mitchell, who had designed the Sea Lion flying boats which had won the Schneider Trophy races in 1919 and 1922, designed the Sea Eagle flying boats of the type illustrated on the cachet of this First Day Cover. Mitchell was later to find world fame by designing the famous Supermarine Spitfire World War II fighter plane. The Sea Eagle was based on a successful type of hull developed in World War I. The overall craft was a compact biplane powered by a 350hp Rolls Royce Eagle IX engine located on two N-struts under the upper wing center and driving a four-blade propel- ler. The hull provided excellent sea keeping qualities as well as ample room for the enclosed cabin which could accommodate six passengers. These passengers could look out of the three windows on each side of the cabin, plus the two in the front. The wings were arranged to fold forward to allow the aircraft to be hangared. Sea Eagle services from Woolston, England, to the Channel Islands began in 1923. By 1924, Imperial Airways had taken over from the British Marine Air Navigation Company, and when one of their Sea Eagles crashed in May, 1924, the company was left with only two of these aircraft to continue operations. A second Sea Eagle was lost when it rammed the harbor at St Peter Port, Guernsey, in January, 1927. The last Sea Eagle was finally withdrawn in 1929.
