Charles Knotek: de Havilland Otter Seaplane The classic De Havilland Otter made its debut as a Canadian "bushplane" in 1951, and due to its wide versatility and rugged dependability has since been utilized in a wide number of military and commercial ventures in Canada as well as in countries around the world. The ability to operate with substantially large loads from small, unprepared landing fields has made the Otter a favorite of bush pilots. Canadian pilots especially appreciate its ability to operate on skis and floats as well as wheels ... a must in a vast land such as Canada where many bodies of water exist. Of interest, an amphibian De Havilland Otter, similar to the one shown on this artwork, provided the sole transportation for the British Antarctic Expedition of 1957-58.
