Charles Knotek: Fokker Super Universal Seaplane Anthony Fokker, one of the greatest names in the history of aeronautics, saw his first airplane in Brussels at the age of eighteen. Just two years later, in 1910, he had designed, built and flown his first aircraft. Driven by native genius and inventiveness, Fokker's brilliant aeronautical career took him from Holland to Germany where he designed and produced sixty different aircraft in support of the German war effort, and finally to America in 1924 where he founded the Fokker Aircraft Corporation -- home of the Great Fokker Super Universal airplane. The "Model 8" Super Universal was conceived in the Fokker plant at Glendale, California, and first flew on May 22, 1929. This versatile aircraft became the most widely produced of all Fokker aircraft - eighty in all -- in the American factory, With an additional twenty-nine built in Japan and fourteen in Canada. Due to its rugged durability, long range flight ability and outstanding cargo capacity, the Fokker Super Universal quickly became a classic in bush flying and continued to fly cargo and passengers into the Canadian wilds throughout the 1930's. Even today, the Fokker Super Universal is considered an important contributing factor to the settlement of much of Canada's vast stretches of wilderness. The craft is an outstanding tribute to its ingenious creator, Anthony Fokker.
