Charles Knotek: Grumman Albatross Airplane Three oceans wash Canada's shores; the majestic Pacific to the west, the frigid Arctic to the north, and the blue Atlantic to the east. The largest lakes in the world are also part of the Canadian landscape. These natural waterways often act as airstrips for amphibious aircraft that fly over Canada's rugged mountain ranges. The remarkable Grumman Albatross is one of the amazing flying boats that traverse this country. Unlike conventional airplanes, flying boats support themselves directly on water and don't require concrete landing strips and tires. Proudly displaying the Royal Canadian Air Force Rescue Patrol's silver and red colors, the Albatross performs sentry duty along Canada's endless coastline. Air rescue is usually the fastest and most practical way of reaching disaster victims and stranded travelers, and the Albatross has proven itself to be both capable and dependable. This artwork depicts the Grumman Albatross, as it completes a mission of mercy to a sinking tanker. For more than a quarter of a century, the Albatross has provided a vital service throughout Canada. For hunters or fishermen stranded in Canada's wilderness, the Albatross swoops to the rescue. For pleasure boats or commercial freighters experiencing trouble, the Albatross brings help. Used originally by the United States Navy and Coast Guards during the 1950's, the Albatross soon became the foundation of the Royal Canadian Rescue Patrol.
