Charles Knotek: Grumman Widgeon Airplane Great oceans wash her shores. Strips of ancient rock cover more than one-fourth of her area and miles of rugged plains and rounded hills are interrupted by water and ice. Canada, the second largest country in the world, is both wilderness and frozen waste land. Canada's flying boats, like the Grumman Widgeon, pioneered air travel into this untamed countryside. After flying for thirty years in Canada's spacious skies, the Widgeons are still the pride of Canadian civil aviation. This artwork depicts the Grumman 44, one of the most reliable and dynamic of the Widgeon line. Initially, these small amphibious flying boats were used by the American Navy and Coast Guard. The Canadians, impressed with the plane's ability to use lakes, rivers and coastal towns as their airports, soon converted them into bush planes. Today, the Grumman Widgeons, under the ownership of many small Canadian air services, still grace the sky. Although these flying boats provide many valuable services, cargo and passenger transport are still the most important. They carry tools and other cargo into Canada's rugged countryside, providing the men and equipment to explore fur trading, timbering and mining opportunities in Canada's rich, but otherwise inaccessible back country. In this country of large water surfaces, surrounded by rugged terrain, it is not surprising that the small, graceful Grumman Widgeons, have come to symbolize the romance of the nation's untamed wilderness.
