Charles Knotek: Canadair CL-215 Airplane Canada is a land of vast woodlands and forests which are particularly susceptible to long periods of hot, dry weather. When the stands of evergreens in these forests become dry and brittle, a carelessly discarded cigarette or a spark from a campfire can turn beautiful forests into acres of charred wastelands. Each year, more than a million and a half acres of prime Canadian forests are devastated by fire. Canada spends more than two million dollars annually for firefighting. Now, with the aid of fire bombers like the Canadair CL-215, the task of fighting forest fires is much easier. Unlike other fire bombers, which must come to a complete stop to pump their hulls full of water, the Canadair can skim along the surface of nearly any lake or river and scoop up over a thousand gallons of water. Within seconds, the Canadair is once again airborne, winging its way to the fire site where it drops its precious cargo and helps extinguish the blaze. Because of this constant non-stop action, the Canadair can make more than one hundred drops in a single day, making this amphibious aircraft one of the most efficient of Canada's fire bombers. The unique chrome yellow and bright red coloring of the Canadair CL-215 makes it easy to see in the dense forests which it so heroically serves.
