Jim Butcher: Vietnam Veterans Memorial - Medals The end of World War I, the first modern global conflict, was officially recognized by Congress on June 4, 1926, with the resolution that "the 11th of November 1918, marked the cessation of the most destructive, sanguinary, and far reaching war in human annals" and that "the recurring anniversary of this date should be commemorated with thanksgiving and prayer and exercises designed to perpetuate peace through good will and mutual understanding between nations." Although the day known as Armistice Day -- was originally set aside to honor veterans of World War I, following the widespread global destruction of World War II, November 11th became a day to honor American veterans of all wars. On June 1, 1954, the day became officially designated as Veterans Day. "Let us solemnly remember the sacrifices of all those who fought so valiantly, on the seas, in the air, and on foreign shores, to preserve our heritage of freedom" said President Dwight D. Eisenhower, "and let us reconsecrate ourselves to the task of promoting an enduring peace so that their efforts shall not have been in vain." Today, Veterans Day continues to honor the sacrifice of Americans who served in the U.S. Armed Forces and to celebrate the values Americans hold as a nation -- duty, honor and civic responsibility. Every year, national ceremonies for Veterans Day are held at the memorial amphitheater built around the Tomb of the Unknowns at Arlington National Cemetery.
