Howard Koslow: Ernest J. King
Ambitious and bold, Admiral Ernest King was a Navy man all the way. Indeed, a spectacular military career began when King left his Ohio hometown for the rigorous training of the United States Naval Academy. Before graduation, he served as a midshipman in the Spanish American War. By 1927, he had won two Distinguished Service Medals, and was qualified as a naval flier. in 1933, he was promoted to rear admiral and placed in charge of the Bureau of Aeronautics. And, by the outbreak of World War II, he was ready for command. A strong leader with a rigid, calculating military mind, King was chosen to serve as Commander in Chief of the United States Naval Fleet, carrying also the complex duties of Chief of Naval Operations. In these posts, he found criticism widely offered. But, standing fast, Ernest King -- and a global strategy which emphasized air strength over battleship prowess -- was able to secure American domination of both sea and air in the explosive Pacific. His intelligent use of American forces is today considered a major reason for Allied victory in World War II. In 1944, he was made Fleet Admiral, one of the first men ever to achieve the prestigious five-star rank. He was also a valued member of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and served as an advisor to President Roosevelt and President Truman.
