David K. Stone: Carl A. Spatz
Carl A. Spaatz was born on June 28, 1891, in Boyertown, Pennsylvania. In 1916, this Pennsylvania boy nicknamed "Tooey" became one of the first twenty-five Westpoint graduates to receive their wings. The following year, 1917, he was sent to France to train pilots for World War I. When the training was completed he received orders to return home. But, Spaatz objected and he received eighteen days flying duty. In this short time, Carl Spaatz earned the Distinguished Service Cross for downing three German planes. Spaatz returned home a hero and continuously attempted to convince the government that future defense depended on a strong air force. World War II proved that Spaatz was right. As commander of the Air Force Combat troops he earned a reputation as the best air commander in history and his men became known as the Spaatzwaffe. There was no question that Spaatz's accomplished strategies led to Allied superiority in the air during the war and, afterward, Spaatz was rewarded with a commission as the first commander of the United States Air Force and the rank of full general.
