Frederick Law Olmsted was born on April 26, 1822, at Hartford, Connecticut. When he was 14, Olmsted contracted sumac poisoning, which seriously affected his eyesight and limited his education. Later his health improved and he attended Yale, studying agricultural science and engineering. In 1851, Olmsted met the famous landscape gardener Andrew Jackson Downing, who expressed his dream of creating a vast park in New York City. Following Downing's untimely death in the summer of 1852, Olmsted decided to keep his idea alive. In 1858, Olmsted and English architect Calvert Vaux designed Central Park, America's first great park. In 1861, President Abraham Lincoln appointed Olmsted secretary and general manager of the United States Sanitary Commission, forerunner of the American Red Cross. Two years later, Olmsted resigned to chair the Yosemite commission, successfully preserving the area as a permanent public park. Olmsted went on to design Prospect Park, Brooklyn (1865), Mount Royal Park, Montreal (1873), the grounds for the United States Capitol in Washington, D.C. (1874), the Boston park system (1875), Stanford University (1886) and the World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago (1893). Among Olmsted's written works are Public Parks and the Enlargement of Towns (1871) and A Consideration of the Justifying Value of a Public Park (1881). Today, Frederick Law Olmsted is honored for establishing public landscape architecture both as an art and a profession.
