Howard Koslow: Winfield Scott
Through two major wars and 50 years of history, the name of Winfield Scott was preeminent in military circles. His brilliance on the battlefield was perhaps the determining factor in much American expansion and settlement. Born in historic Virginia in the year 1786, Scott grew up with a clear sense of liberty. Thus, at 21, he joined the Cavalry and began a career that would influence the course of history. By 1812, he was a lieutenant colonel of the Army, serving along the explosive Canadian border. Captured, paroled and later injured, he rose quickly through the ranks -- to brigadier general. Boldly leading his troops across the Niagara, Scott defeated the British -- against amazing odds -- at Chippewa Creek. Soon "Old Fuss and Feathers" -- as he was often called -- was brevetted major general and honored as a hero even by the U.S. Congress. A generation later, still a soldier, he commanded the sons of those officers at Chippewa Creek, amassing an army of more than 13,000 men to go against the fearless Mexican General Santa Anna. Delivering the final blows of the Mexican War, Scott's army marched victoriously into Mexico City on September 14, 1847. A year later, Daniel Webster described him well as "... a man who has performed the most brilliant campaign on recent military record, a man who has warred against the enemy, warred against the climate, warred against a thousand unpropitious circumstances and has carried the flag of his country to the capital of the enemy."
