Howard Koslow: Mark Clark On the calm evening of September 8, 1943, troops under the command of General Mark Clark struck out by sea from their base in North Africa for Salerno, Italy -- the World War II Allied invasion of Italy was underway. At 6:30 pm that night, news of Italy's surrender came over ship radios and wild celebration broke out among the men. But senior officers knew that -- no matter what the Italians did -- the Germans would fight to the death in Italy. Events ahead would prove them right. The landing at Salerno began at 3:30 am on September 9 and in ensuing hours thoughts of celebration vanished as the men crawled through piercing barbed wire and dodged crushing enemy tanks and machine gun fire ... taking every inch at great peril. Then, at 7 am they were hit by the first large scale tank assault. However, despite unspeakable odds, by 4 pm the men could report that the enemy had fallen back and they had seized their initial objectives. Still, the worst lay ahead. Throughout the next days, German troops hit hard. Nevertheless, Clark moved his command post in close behind the artillery line and moved out among the gunners, encouraging them ... all the while exposing himself to great danger. Finally, relief came from the sea and air as paratroopers and bombers unleashed fury from the sky on freedom's foes. On September 18, after nine days of fierce fighting, the Germans retreated. Although many battles lay ahead, the Allies had a foothold in Italy ... and they were there to stay.
