Howard Koslow: William Westmoreland Truly looking the part of a general, William Westmoreland seemed to follow his military destiny with ease. Tall and lean, square of jaw, neatly trimmed, and meticulously dressed, Westmoreland was indeed an inspiration to his men. His Army success was almost a foregone conclusion. In fact, one biographer called him "the inevitable general" and his classmates called him "Chief," thinking he would surely rise to Army chief of staff. And so he did. It began with great success at West Point. Then came World War II where Westmoreland duly proved his worthiness as commander of the 34th Field Artillery Battalion of the 9th Division -- a group which he eventually led, triumphantly, into Germany. After the war, Westmoreland pursued his Army career with typical determination and ambition. He became airborne qualified and took command of a Regimental Airborne Combat Team. In the 1950s he began to rise through the Army bureaucracy, serving in the Pentagon, attending Harvard Business School, and taking a post as secretary to the Army chief of staff. In 1956 he became the youngest major general in the Army. Eight years later, in 1964, Lyndon Johnson named Westmoreland commander, U.S. Military Assistance Command in Vietnam. Through the most heated days of a most controversial war, Westmoreland doggedly determined military strategy and commanded American troops as best he could. When he returned home, he fulfilled the promise of his West Point days, becoming Army chief of staff.
