Howard Koslow: Omar Bradley Born in Clark, Missouri, on February 12, 1893, Omar N. Bradley graduated from the U.S. Military Academy in 1915. During World War I he served with the 14th Infantry Regiment. In World War II, Bradley succeeded General George S. Patton in command of the 2nd Corps in North Africa and Sicily. His superb leadership brought him to the attention of Supreme Allied Commander General Dwight D. Eisenhower, who chose him to command the 1st U.S. Army in the June 1944 invasion of Normandy. After liberating Paris, Bradley's forces were expanded to include the 12th U.S. Army Group, which consisted of the 1st, 3rd, 9th and 15th U.S. Armies -- more than 1,300,000 men and the largest American field command in U.S. history. After defeating the Germans at the Battle of the Bulge, Bradley's men seized the first bridgehead over the Rhine River, enabling them to strike at the heart of the Nazi menace. Bradley's troops swept through France, Luxembourg, Belgium, The Netherlands, Czechoslovakia, Austria and Germany. Always concerned about the welfare of his men, Bradley was known as a "soldier's soldier" and a "GI's general." After the war, Bradley served as Administrator of Veterans' Affairs. In 1948 he succeeded Eisenhower as Chief of Staff of the U.S. Army. In 1949 Bradley served as the first Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff in the Department of Defense and as the first Chairman of the Military Committee of NATO. On September 22, 1950, Bradley was promoted to the five-star rank of General of the Army.
