Jim Butcher: Blind Veteran Reading Braille Few tragedies are as devastating as the loss of one's sight. A person stricken with blindness is plunged into a new, dark world, which can only be perceived by the remaining senses. Daily activities which at one time seemed routine can become terrifying ordeals. Pressures are put on family relationships and friendships, for it is not only the victim who must adjust to a life without sight, but those around him as well. Feelings of inadequacy and helplessness may lead to severe depression, as hopes for a useful and productive life fade away. Yet, for blinded veterans this need not be so. The Western Blind Rehabilitation Center, a thirty-bed facility located in Palo Alto, California, has been established by the Veterans Administration to help blinded veterans, as well as those with severely impaired vision, to adjust to their new world. Each year the Center helps over two hundred veterans achieve a substantial degree of self-sufficiency. The veterans learn the skills necessary to function independently in their homes and in society. They learn alternative methods of communication and increase their ability to use their other senses. In addition to these services, the Center also offers counseling to the veterans and their families. Perhaps most importantly, the Center provides the veterans with hope for a brighter, more rewarding future than they may have thought possible.
