Dennis Lyall: Johns Hopkins Even though he had lacked an advanced education, wealthy Baltimore philanthropist Johns Hopkins was a successful entrepreneur. Hopkins began his lucrative career working for his uncle as a humble grocery merchant. During the recession of 1819, Hopkins recognized the advantages of taking whiskey as payment for groceries from people who otherwise could not afford to eat. Both sides benefited from this arrangement -- his grateful patrons turned whiskey into food and the shrewd merchant turned whiskey into profit, reselling it under the brand name, "Hopkins' Best." Hopkins uncle, however, disapproved of this business practice, and of the love that was developing between his daughter and Hopkins. The two men parted ways, and Hopkins and his beautiful cousin were never able to marry. Hopkins' business success continued, however -- when he died, he was able to provide generously for his relatives, and still bequeath a sizable sum to create Johns Hopkins University and Johns Hopkins Hospital.
