Tom McNeely: Bobby Jones and Babe Zaharias By the year 1457, the game of golf had become so popular in Scotland that King James II issued a proclamation banning "futeball and golfe," because the country's gentlemen were neglecting their archery practice. The ban had little effect, however, for golf remains one of the most popular sports in the world today. Each weekend thousands of golfers can be found on courses throughout the world honing their skills at this exacting sport. Among the most successful golfers of all time were Americans Babe Zaharias and Bobby Jones, shown on this First Day Cover. Their dedication and zeal helped maintain the popularity golf has enjoyed through the centuries. This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood® First Day Combination Cover for the U.S. 18¢ Babe Zaharias and Bobby Jones stamps issued September 22, 1981.
