Tom McNeely: Lewis and Clark Meriwether Lewis and William Clark set out on a "sightseeing trip" from St. Louis on March 14, 1804 -- and they didn't return for over two years. For these two men led the expedition which first explored the vast, uncharted territory acquired by the United States in the Louisiana Purchase. Commissioned by President Thomas Jefferson himself, Lewis and Clark led a group of over forty soldiers and civilians up the Missouri River to the Continental Divide, and then down the Clearwater, Snake, and Columbia rivers to the Pacific Ocean. It was a journey fraught with hardship and danger. In addition to the long, rugged voyage up river, Lewis and Clark encountered hostile Indians, some of whom had been hired by Spanish authorities in Mexico. Nevertheless, Lewis and Clark reached the Pacific safely over a year after they left St. Louis, and completed their mission admirably. First, they made maps and geological surveys of vast areas of wilderness to the west of the Mississippi, and thus paved the way for future settlers. Second, they brought back specimens of many plant and animal species which had previously been unavailable for scientific study, including the prairie dog, jackrabbit, pronghorn, and mountain sheep. And, finally, they convinced a number of Indian tribes of Washington's friendly intentions. Their return to St. Louis on September 23, 1806, after they had been given up for dead, stirred the hearts of all Americans.
