Gene Jarvis: James Buchanan Profile Although he had sought his party's Presidential nomination on three previous occasions, when nominated in 1856, James Buchanan balked, for he feared Civil War might come in the ensuing four years. His assessment was correct. Years of diplomatic service had taught President Buchanan that compromise was the best of solutions. But, as the volatile slavery issue threatened to bring Civil War, Buchanan's attitude of compromise seemed only to fan the fires of conflict. By 1860, the situation had become too hot for Buchanan to handle, so he did not seek reelection, easing the way for Abraham Lincoln. In the months before Lincoln's inauguration, President Buchanan watched as South Carolina seceded. One of the high points of Buchanan's term was the advent of the Pony Express in April 1860.
