Gene Jarvis: Ulysses S. Grant Profile Credited with saving the Union in the Civil War, Ulysses S. Grant was a beloved American legend. In 1869, when he assumed the Presidency, it was generally understood that President Grant knew little of politics, but the people felt sure that his famous common sense would serve him well in the nation's highest office. Nothing could have been further from the truth. A terrible judge of character, he gradually yielded to the influence of ambitious politicians. Although he was personally above reproach, his administration was hopelessly ensnarled in scandal. Through two terms, President Grant's life headed rapidly downhill. After losing his bid for a third term, Grant left Washington to become a partner in a brokerage house. There he was savagely swindled and left virtually penniless.
